Police Arrest 22 Foreign Nationals Over Suspected Illegal Mining Activities

Police in the Savannah Region have arrested 22 Togolese nationals suspected of attempting to engage in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality.

The arrest was made on January 23, 2026, when officers from the Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department intercepted a Kia truck, registration number BA 223-12, during a routine operation. The vehicle was being driven by a suspect identified as Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

According to police sources, preliminary questioning revealed that the occupants of the vehicle were all nationals of Togo. They reportedly stated that they were en route to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining operations, where they intended to engage in galamsey-related activities.

Following the arrest, the suspects were taken into police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further immigration verification and legal procedures.

Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Wider Crackdown on Illegal Mining

The arrest forms part of broader efforts by security agencies to clamp down on illegal mining across the country, particularly in areas where galamsey activities continue to threaten water bodies, farmlands, and local livelihoods.
